Psst! Come closer! I hear there’s a big sekrit coming out tomorrow involving this website. Found out about this last night and at the time, nothing was there except for the ability to sign up for the newsletter. I posted the link on Twitter, being the nosy person I am, asking if anyone knew about it and was told it was a sekrit that would be unveiled on Monday. Here’s the thing about sekrits. If more than one person knows? IT’S NO LONGER A SEKRIT, PEOPLE. Trust me on that. It’s just NOT. Since I heard about it via someone else who heard it via someone, who, damnit, you know how it goes, right? I’m coming off as bitchy because this seems to come off as too high school-ish for me. What’s the big deal anyway? I’m looking at the website now and right now I’m getting the “that’s it? That’s the big sekrit?” vibe, not very impressed yet so I’m actually hoping the sekrit hasn’t truly been shared until tomorrow’s “announcement”.

Maybe it’s their way of getting more visitors to the website? If so, the link is above, click away and see if you find something you like.

In other news, come back here tomorrow because I have a SEKRIT to share myself. Well, not really but it amuses me to say it because “sekrits” seem to be the theme these days. Carry on.

AFTER DARK WITH A SCOUNDREL by Alexandra Hawkins
Copyright: February 2011
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Series: Lords of Vice — Book 3
Source: Received from Publisher.

Notorious, handsome, and decadent, the Lords of Vice break rules and hearts with equal aplomb. But what if one woman is on to their game—and the player becomes the played?

ONE STOLEN KISS

Young, tender, and highly impressionable, Lady Regan can’t help but be intrigued by her brother’s wayward friends—the wickedly charming Lords of Vice. One man in particular, the dashing Lord Hugh Mordare  (known simply as “Dare” among the ton), utterly captivates her—in spite of his reputation as a notorious womanizer. But when she steals an innocent kiss from Dare, Regan is swiftly packed off to boarding school, safely away from danger…and desire.

ONE SWEET SEDUCTION

Five years later, Regan returns—a proper lady and ravishing beauty. Miss Swann’s Academy for Young Ladies has taught her how to behave in polite society. But all the training in the world cannot extinguish her love for Dare. Now, she hopes to beat the master of seduction at his own game—by daring Dare to love her in return. This time, both of their hearts are on the line…and winner takes all.

Here we are, back with the Lords of Vice. I have to be honest and say that after a while, since I read these back to back to back, whenever the term “Lords of Vice” was mentioned, I rolled my eyes because it’s said so many times in all the books. I get it. They’re the Lords of Vice. Wooo to the hooo. Can we just call them by name now? It’s so repetitive and I think I need to stop reading series/trilogies back to back like this because I’m finding I’m not enjoying them as much as I want to. It becomes a nitpicking thing to me to find similar phrases and/or a game of “See how many times Lords of Vice are mentioned on one page or how long I can read before it’s mentioned again.” Pure silliness on my part but it amuses me.

This one opens up when the heroine is 15 and the hero is in his early to mid 20s. At one point he’s got her in his lap and he’s thinking the following to himself:

As far as Dare was concerned, he had earned a hefty reward for resisting Frost’s tempting little sister. Two years ago, he had managed to keep his hands off her, had he not?

That gave me a slight ick factor moment because he had these thoughts about her when she was 13. Yes, I know it’s a historical and they married young but still…knowing it and accepting it are two different things and it just creeped me out a bit.

Anyway, they share a kiss, big brother Frost comes in, turns all icy on them and sends his sister away because while he’s part of the Lords of Vice and Dare is a friend of his, no way does he like the fact that one of the Lords of Vice is messing with his sister. Five years later, Regan finds her way back home by way of bending the truth. One, because she missed her brother and her home and two, because she was twenty now and she wanted to seduce Dare because she’s always loved him.

What ensues next is Regan doing whatever she can to get her way, Dare “pretending” he’s just looking out for his best friend’s little sister & Frost acting like the King he seems to think he is and making everyone around him his pawns. Throw in a few batshit crazy family relatives on Dare’s side and you have a riveting tale on your hands because you just have to see how it all plays out.

I will say in book 1, I thought Frost was a douchebag. In book 2, I thought he was an ass for the way he spoke about Sophia & in this one, at the beginning I thought he was an arrogant jerk but by the time I reached the end of the book, he seemed a little more human to me, not as icy/cold as he has been described. I’m still intrigued enough by this series to wonder if he will get his own book and if he does, I hope it’ll be by someone who will knock him on his ass and have him questioning everything he thinks he knows.

TILL DAWN WITH THE DEVIL by Alexandra Hawkins
Copyright: August 2010
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Series: Lords of Vice — Book 2
Source: Bought Kindle copy from Amazon.

Notorious, handsome, and decadent, the Lords of Vice break rules and hearts with equal aplomb. But even the wickedest of men is no match for a virtuous woman…

SOMETIMES IT TAKES A ROGUE…

Few women can resist a man like Gabriel “Reign” Housely, the Earl of Rainecourt. With divine good looks, delectable charms, and delicious wealth, he would seem to be every marriage-minded mother’s dream match for their daughters. But not so, given the mysterious death of his first wife. Fortunately for Gabriel, he has no plans to seriously court any of the London ladies ever again. That is, until he shares one unforgettable dance with a mysterious stranger…

TO CAPTURE AN ANGEL…

Exquisitely beautiful though decidedly modest, Lady Sophia usually shuns the festive ballrooms of London society. But when a man who calls himself “Reign” enters her life—seemingly from out of nowhere—and shows her true kindness, her wary young heart begins to melt. Of course, Sophia would be shocked to learn the truth about Reign’s past. But when scandal strikes, this devilish stranger may be her only salvation…

So far my mood this month is calling for historicals. I’m reading what calls out to me when I browse through my TBR and e-TBR. After reading ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE and having such a strong reaction to it, I felt I should give her Lords of Vice series another try and read this one.

I really liked Sophia. Despite her handicap, she refused to let it define her. She was a very strong, independent woman. I also liked Reign. He put out this image of who he was when it really wasn’t him. Both had a shared past that Reign didn’t know about when he first met her and by the time he did, I could see he was already hooked and he didn’t care about it. He just wanted Sophia.

I don’t know, maybe because I read them back to back, I noticed similar things happening. Sophia’s brother tries to trade in/marry off his sister to cover debts he can’t pay off. (Mother of heroine in book 1 tried that too, she had a gambling problem.) Reign jumped in to save the day. Well, not really, Sophia had already escaped her locked bedroom and was outside the house when Reign came to save the day. (Hero in book 1 went to save heroine from clutches of creepy dude too.)

Overall, although there were a couple things I did not like in it, this one was much better for me than the previous book.

Next up, Dare’s book!

New Giveaway! :smile2_tb:

I’ve been a huge fan of Teresa Medeiros for years. I have several of her books on my Keeper Shelf, both her historicals and her Time-Travel duet. Two that stand out in my mind are BREATH OF MAGIC (TT) and YOURS UNTIL DAWN (H). I giggled my way through BREATH OF MAGIC when it first came out and have been nagging Ms. Medeiros with emails & Tweets asking when it would be available for Kindle because although I have it in paperback — and replaced it several times because of how worn the book became — I need it in e-format too. Because then I’d have it on hand all the time. It would be bliss. I need it so please, PTB, make my wish come true soon? Please??

*****STOP THE PRESSES! I just checked Amazon on the off-chance that BREATH OF MAGIC was available for Kindle & yippee skippee, IT IS! *happy dancing while clicking on the Buy button* Oh yes, it is MINE, all mine! :jittery_tb: Look at that…ask and you shall receive…well, not really but still, I’ll go with it. :danceele:

The second one that was an all-nighter for me was YOURS UNTIL DAWN. I’m a sucker for books with wounded characters and I loved everything about this one. The twist at the end was so unexpected that I soon as I finished it, I went back and reread it, looking at it with new eyes that had missed all the signs in the beginning. I love when an author can do that to me. It automatically puts the book (and author!) on my Keeper Shelf. :exactly:

So for this giveaway, tell me what your favorite book and/or books by Ms. Medeiros are. If you haven’t read her, what books off her bookshelf jump out at you?

Giveaway will run from today, February 10th, until Wednesday, February 16th. Open to US residents only.

GOODNIGHT TWEETHEART by Teresa Medeiros
Copyright: December 2010
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

New York Times bestselling author Teresa Medeiros absolutely dazzles in this quick-witted, laugh-out-loud funny, and highly moving love story that will set readers’ hearts atwitter.

Abigail Donovan has a lot of stuff she should be doing. Namely writing her next novel. A bestselling author who is still recovering from a near Pulitzer Prize win and the heady success that follows Oprah’s stamp of approval, she is stuck at Chapter Five and losing confidence daily. But when her publicist signs her up for a Twitter account, she’s intrigued. What’s all the fuss?

Taken under the wing of one of her Twitter followers, “MarkBaynard”—a quick witted, quick-typing professor on sabbatical—Abby finds it easy to put words out into the world 140 characters at a time. And once she gets a handle on tweets, retweets, direct messages, hashtags, and trends, she starts to feel unblocked in writing and in life. After all, why should she be spending hours in her apartment staring at her TweetDeck and fretting about her stalled career when Mark is out there traveling the world and living?

Or is he?

Told almost entirely in tweets and DMs, Goodnight Tweetheart is a truly modern take on a classic tale of love and loss—a Griffin and Sabine for the Twitter generation.

Mark your calendars! :) Maya Banks has a Highlander trilogy coming out back to back later this year (September, October & November) and she just shared the covers. So pretty, right? And on the plus side for me, these will fit perfectly in the Highlander Challenge I’m doing this year. :whoo:

IN BED WITH A HIGHLANDER by Maya Banks
Copyright: September 2011
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Series: Highlander Trilogy Book #1

Maya’s beguiling new trilogy features three unforgettable brothers risking everything to save their clan and their legacy—and surrender their hearts to love.

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

Though the illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril, only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband finds her craving his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

SEDUCTION OF A HIGHLAND LASS by Maya Banks
Copyright: October 2011
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Series: Highlander Trilogy Book #2

A warrior is caught between family loyalty and forbidden love in book two of Maya’s sensual new trilogy featuring three indomitable Highlanders.

Fiercely loyal to his elder brother, Alaric McCabe leads his clan in the fight for their birthright. Now, he is prepared to wed for duty, as well. But on his way to claim the hand of Rionna McDonald, daughter of a neighboring chieftain, he is ambushed and left for dead. Miraculously, his life is saved by the soft touch of a Highland angel, a courageous beauty who will put his fealty to his clan, his honor, and his deepest desires, to the test.

An outcast from her own clan, Keeley McDonald was betrayed by those she loved and trusted. When the wounded warrior falls from his horse, she is drawn to his strong, lean body. The wicked glint in his green eyes ignites a passion that will follow them back to Alaric’s keep, where their forbidden love draws them deeper into the pleasures of the flesh. But as conspiracy and danger circle closer, Alaric must make an impossible choice. Will he betray his blood ties for the woman he loves?

NEVER LOVE A HIGHLANDER by Maya Banks
Copyright: November 2011
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Series: Highlander Trilogy Book #3

In a tale of strong ties and true love, Maya’s trilogy comes to its stunning conclusion, as the youngest McCabe brother uses sword and seduction to save his clan—and seal his heart.

Caelen McCabe’s young, reckless heart nearly destroyed his clan. Now putting family loyalty above all else, he steps up to marry his older brother’s jilted bride and salvage the uneasy alliance between two clans. While beautiful Rionna McDonald is a fit wife for any man, Caelen trusts no woman, especially not this sweet temptress who torments him with white hot longing.

As the sacrificial lamb in her father’s power game, Rionna will do her duty but protect her heart and her pride from another man’s humiliation. Despite everything, the heat in Caelen’s touch melts her defenses and she craves the sensual delights of a husband who guards his emotions as fiercely as his clan. But when the ultimate battle for the McCabe legacy is upon them, Rionna’s true warrior spirit emerges. She will risk the wrath of her father, the fury of her enemies, and her life to prove to Caelen that his wife’s love is too precious to lose.

ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE by Alexandra Hawkins
Copyright: February 2010
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Series: Lords of Vice — Book 1
Source: Discounted at Amazon for $2.99 for Kindle so bought it. Also listed for same price for Nook.

Notorious, handsome, and decadent, the Lords of Vice prowl the glittering ballrooms of Regency London— breaking rules and hearts with equal aplomb. But even the wildest rogue must eventually meet his match…

IT BEGAN AS A FAVOR…

Seduce Lady Juliana Ivers and then cast her aside: Those are his sister’s instructions. Alexius Braverton, Marquess of Sinclair—known as Sin to the ton—is happy enough to oblige, especially when he catches a glimpse of his target. Juliana is completely unlike the empty-headed chits who barely hold his attention for a week. A true gentleman would leave her to find a worthy suitor. But then, a Lord of Vice would never claim to be a gentleman.

WOULD IT END IN FOREVER?

Juliana is expected to marry well to improve her family’s finances, even if she secretly longs to make a living through her musical compositions. A dalliance can only complicate matters, though not even practical Juliana can help succumbing to the aptly named Sin. But one unforgettable night will draw her into a scandalous affair—and a seduction begun as sport will soon become deliciously, dangerously real…

I don’t even know where to begin with this book.

Nicknames of hero & his friends reminded me a lot of Stephanie Laurens’ Bar Cynter series…Sin, Vane, Dare, Reign, Frost, Saint, etc.

Hero is basically whored out by his sister and told to seduce the heroine then dump her because heroine was so much younger than sister who feared she was going to lose the one guy who paid her any attention at balls.

Mother dearest is a compulsive gambler and to pay off her debt, she practically sold the heroine to some random titled idiot for the summer so she could play his mistress. If that wasn’t enough, she was saved from that only to be locked in a room & tied to the bed in her “cousin’s” house because creepy cousin has wanted to marry her since he saw her when she was 13 years old. Pervert. (Although creepy cousin is no blood relation, she grew up thinking of him as such so that just gives me a creepy vibe about what he tried to do to her.)

Hero comes in, saves the day blah blah blah but there is NO groveling, no confrontation with the harpy of a sister and nothing to make up for the humiliation of everything the hero and his sister put the heroine through and she, the brainless twit, just takes him back once he says “I love you”.

Blech. Spare me. :gaah:

I truly need a WTF icon to use in books/reviews like this.

As I am a glutton for punishment, I’m currently reading Book 2, TILL DAWN WITH THE DEVIL, about Reign. Let’s hope his book doesn’t make me want to hurt him as much as Sin’s book made me want to kill him & his harpy of a sister.

Today I have a special giveaway to offer. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of EAT, PRAY, LOVE has a new paperback, COMMITTED, coming out through Penguin Books on February 1st.

Giveaway will run from today, January 21st, until Wednesday, January 26th. For the chance to win a copy of COMMITTED, just leave a comment below. Easy peasy. :)

Thanks to Lindsay at Penguin for the giveaway!

Winner will be announced Wednesday night.

Elizabeth Gilbert’s COMMITTED: A Love Story debuted at #1 on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list when it was published by Viking in January of 2010 and was also a USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller. On February 1st, Penguin Books will release the book in paperback.

COMMITTED begins where Gilbert’s #1 New York Times bestseller Eat, Pray, Love ended—just after she fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who’d been living in Bali when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were skittish divorce survivors.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the U.S. government, which—after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing—gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again.

Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Elizabeth and Felipe spent the next ten months wandering haphazardly across Asia, traveling with limited resources and waiting for word from their immigration lawyer as their case languished in bureaucratic uncertainty. Gilbert used this time to ponder the subject of romantic commitment, interviewing everyone from housewives in Vietnam and Thailand to family members and friends, and looking closely at how the institution of marriage has evolved to reflect our social needs and how it is so often intertwined with religion, politics, class, and money.

COMMITTED tells the story of one woman’s efforts to make peace with marriage before she enters its estate once more. Told with Gilbert’s trademark wit, intelligence, and compassion, it frankly discusses issues of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, tradition, economic realities, divorce risks, and social expectations. Myths are debunked; fears are unthreaded; historical perspective is found; and romantic fantasies are ultimately exchanged for vital emotional compromises. In the end, Gilbert’s book is a clear-eyed celebration of the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails.

About the Author:
ELIZABETH GILBERT is an award-winning writer of both fiction and non-fiction. Her short story collection Pilgrims was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway award, and her novel Stern Men was a New York Times notable book. Her 2002 book The Last American Man was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critic’s Circle Award. Just saw this come through on Facebook, posted by Sylvia…how beautiful is this cover? SEVEN YEARS TO SIN comes out August 30, 2011.

The longer the resistance…

Seven years ago, on the eve of her wedding, proper Lady Jessica Sheffield witnessed a licentious scene no innocent young miss could imagine. Shocked, yet strangely titillated, she’d held her silence regarding scandalous Alistair Caulfield, and walked down the aisle as expected. But through years of serene, unremarkable marriage, Caulfield’s image remained burned into her imagination, fueling very illicit dreams…

…the sweeter the reward

Alistair ran far from the temptation of the prim debutante with the fire of passion in her eyes–all the way to the West Indies. As a successful merchant, he has little in common with the rakehell youth she knew. But when newly widowed Jessica steps aboard his ship for a transatlantic passage, seven years’ worth of denied pleasures are held in check by nothing more than a few layers of silk–and the certainty that surrender will consume them both…
